Cam in Cambridge |
The Cam is a river in England that flows into the Great Ouse south of the city of Ely and is thus connected to the English canal network.
The Cam arises as the River Rhee in Ashwell and initially flows a little north through Bedfordshire . To the northwest of Guilden Morden it crosses the border to Cambridgeshire , here various unnamed tributaries flow into it and it is known as both the River Rhee and the Cam. Its course then turns to the east. To the west of Harston , it turns north. Only at the southern edge of Cambridge does it flow under the name Cam.
Surname
The river's previous name was Granta, after the Anglo-Saxon town of Grantebrycge, now Cambridge. After the city was renamed, the river was also given a new name that matched the name of the city. One of the River Cam's two tributaries still bears the name Granta.
