St. Walburg

St. Walburg ( Italian Santa Valburga ) is the capital of the municipality of Ulten in the middle Ulten Valley in South Tyrol ( Italy ). The place named after the patroness of the parish church , the holy Walburga , is located at 1190  m slm and has about 800 inhabitants.

history

The veneration of St. Walburga, sister of St. Willibald von Eichstätt , was widespread in the Middle Ages. The parish church of St. Walburga in Ultental is in 1278 in a document from Pope Nicholas III. first mentioned. Another documented mention of the church, of which the eastern part of the nave walls and the tower with pilaster strips , four round-arched friezes, pointed arch acoustic windows and square spire , comes from 1318. At the end of the 15th century, the Gothic choir with ribbed vaults was added. One altar building is mentioned in 1505, another in 1755. The altarpiece of the baroque high altar shows the Ascension of St. Walburga. The baroque pulpit dates from 1795.

The nave was extended by two bays in 1843/44, reusing the old west portal. In 1926 the church was extended to the north by a side aisle. Frescoes inside, painted in 1947 by Peter Fellin from Meran , show the anointing of Walburga to the abbess of Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm and the distribution of bread to the poor by the saint. On the outer facade is a fresco by Rudolf Stolz (1874–1960; known for the dance of death at the Sexten cemetery ) from 1927, which shows the aged Simeon with the baby Jesus.

The village developed around the church, which still rises on a hill at the entrance to the village. The church was made a curate in 1650 .

In 1977 the church was damaged by an earthquake and then secured with granite support columns.

The typical scattered settlement village is growing more and more towards the valley and extends today to the Zoggler reservoir (created in the 1950s) .

economy

In addition to tourism and mountain agriculture, there are several craft businesses in St. Walburg, including the Ultner Brot bakery , which has existed since 1919. The place has its own heating plant for heat supply.
