Ulten ancient larches

The Ultental , also simply called Ulten ( Italian Val d'Ultimo ), is the 40 km long valley of the Falschauer in the Ortler Alps in South Tyrol . It runs parallel to the Vinschgau in the north and flows into the Adige Valley near Lana in the area of ​​the Merano valley basin . The largest part of the Ultental belongs to the communities Ulten and St. Pankraz , the valley entrance area to the community Lana. The uppermost valley sections are in the Stilfserjoch National Park .

The localities in Ultental, in the order outward of the valley, are

Between St. Walburg and St. Pankraz, the road branches off to the south over the Hofmahdjoch into the Non Valley .

In the vicinity of St. Gertraud are the three Ulten ancient larches , which are estimated to be 850 years old.

The village of St. Walburg has an archaeological site that is outstanding in the Alpine region: the fire sacrifice site from the Latène period on the church hill.

The Schwemmalm ski area is located in the middle of the Ulten Valley . There is also a cross-country ski run from St. Nikolaus to St. Gertraud.

The Ultental also offers many tour options for mountain hikers. Starting with marked hiking trails up to high alpine tour routes. The highest of the Ulten mountains is the Hintere Eggenspitze with 3443  m .
