Washington Benavidez , also known as Washington Benavides , (born March 3, 1930 in Tacuarembó , Uruguay ; † September 24, 2017 ) was a Uruguayan writer , lecturer , translator , literary critic and radio host .

Life

Benavidez taught literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Education (FHCE) of the Universidad de la República (UdelaR), Departamento de Letras Modernas y Contemporáneas . He was the coordinator of seminars of the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) and also worked as a lecturer at the Escuela Universitaria de Música .

In the 1950s he worked for Asir magazine . At the station CX 30 Radio Nacional he led the music program from 1977 to 1997.

Benavidez has translated numerous writers such as Oswald de Andrade , Carlos Drummond de Andrade , Gregorio de Mattos , Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna and João Guimarães Rosa . He also worked extensively as a critic. As a book author - he made his debut in 1955 with the poetry work Tata Vizcacha - he has published numerous volumes of poetry, the novel Biografía de Caín , with Moscas de provincia a collection of stories and also other literary works as part of anthologies . He has received numerous awards for this and has received several awards from the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture and the Intendencia Municipal of Montevideo (IMM). He was also awarded the Premio Bartolomé Hidalgo twice. Benavidez included the poets and musicians from the department Tacuarembó existing Grupo de Tacuarembó on.

His texts were also used in the recordings of numerous artists such as Abel García , Eduardo Darnauchans , Washington Carrasco and Cristina Fernández , Jorge Galemire , Numa Moraes , Los Zucará , Los Olimareños , Laura Canoura , Pablo Estramín , Omar Romano , Daniel Viglietti , Alfredo Zitarrosa , Eduardo Larbanois and Mario Carrero , Tacuruses and Grupo Vocal Universo .

Benavidez was the uncle of the singer Carlos Benavídes .
