Tacuarembó is a department in Uruguay .

geography

Uruguay's largest department in terms of area is located in the northern center of the country, but has only a low population density. The capital Tacuarembó in the north of the region, with 54,757 inhabitants (as of 2011), represents more than half of the population of the administrative unit. It is also one of the larger cities of Uruguay. The second largest city is Paso de los Toros with 12,985 inhabitants (as of 2011). It is located in the extreme south of the department in the immediate vicinity of Uruguay's largest dam, the Rincón del Bonete , which dams the Río Negro . Other larger urban settlements within the department are San Gregorio de Polanco , Ansina and Curtina .

Residents

While 90,489 inhabitants were counted in 2004, the number of inhabitants determined in the context of the 2011 census was 90,053. Of these, 44,169 were men and 45,884 women.

education

Tacuarembó has a total of twelve secondary schools ( Liceos ), in which 7,261 students are taught by 518 teachers. The oldest Liceo in the department is the 309 Liceo Nº 1 Departamental "Ildefonso Pablo Estéves" , which was founded in 1912 in the department capital Tacuarembó . (As of December 2008)

The Montevideo - Rivera or Paysandú - Tres Arboles - Rivera railway runs through the department .
