Tacuarembó [ takwaɾemˈbo ] is a city in Uruguay . It is the capital of the Tacuarembó department .

location

It is located in the central north of the country. The distance to the southern state capital Montevideo is 390 kilometers. In the north of the city flows the Arroyo Tacuarembó Chico , a tributary of the Río Tacuarembó .

history

The city was founded on January 27, 1832 by Bernabé Rivera as Villa de San Fructuoso and renamed Tacuarembó on June 17, 1912 .

In the 2011 census, the population was 54,757, of which 26,332 were men and 28,425 women, after 51,224 in 2004 and only 45,891 in 1996.

Meaning of the name

Tacuarembó is the only city in Uruguay to have a name from the Guaraní language . This name refers to the many reed species that are abundant in the area.

Tacuarembó is accessible via Rutas 5 and 26, which meet in the urban area . The city is also on the Montevideo - Rivera railway line , which is not used for passenger transport. In addition, Tacuarembó Airport, located in the south-east of the city, provides access to air traffic.

Attractions

The Museo del Indo y del Gaucho in Tacuarembó exhibits art collections of the Indians and the gauchos as well as collections of weapons and hand tools. In the city is also the Cathedral of San Fructuoso ( Catedral de San Fructuoso ), the foundation stone of which was laid on June 29, 1899. The diocese of Tacuarembó has had its seat here since November 3, 1960 .

In the second week of March each year, Tacuarembó hosts a large festival of gaucho culture, the so-called Fiesta de la Patria de Gaucho , which is one of the largest of its kind in South America.

Sports

The Tacuarembó FC played until the 2010/2011 season and again from the 2014/15 season in the Primera División . The team's home games are played at the Estadio Raúl Goyenola .
