Víctor Licandro
Víctor Manuel Licandro (born February 26, 1918 in Tacuarembó , Tacuarembó Department , † March 30, 2011 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan general and politician who was one of the founders of the Frente Amplio .
Life
Licandro already engaged politically and early in 1933 for taking part in protests against the dictatorship of Gabriel Terra arrested. After attending school in 1940, he joined his military service , and trained as an officer of cavalry , where he initially stationed in Tacuarembó cavalry regiment 5 served. In 1947 he was one of the team for topography in the preparation of a dam planned together with Argentina on Salto Grande . After a two-year study visit to Switzerland and the Netherlands , on his return in 1953, he joined the commission commissioned by the Military Geographic Institute to prepare for the construction of central hydropower plants . Afterwards he was Secretary General of the Central Military Commission between 1956 and 1961 and in 1958 he became Commander of Military Region III and a member of the Army Honorary Council . Licandro, who rose to general during his military career, submitted his resignation in 1968 in protest against the government of Jorge Pacheco Areco .
On February 5, 1971, he was one of the founders of the left party alliance Frente Amplio. On July 6, 1973 he was arrested together with General Líber Seregni (1916-2004) after he had previously publicly criticized the coup d'état of June 27, 1973 against President Juan María Bordaberry . He was then imprisoned until 1983 and, after his release in November 1983, took part in demonstrations calling for a return to democracy .
After the final end of the military dictatorship in 1985, he took on several important offices within the Frente Amplio, where he was temporarily President of the Tribunal for Political Conduct and President of the Defense Commission.
