Ildefonso Pereda Valdés

Ildefonso Pereda Valdés (born March 6, 1899 in Tacuarembó , Dept. Tacuarembó , † July 17, 1996 in Montevideo ) was a writer from Uruguay .

Pereda Valdés studied at the University of Montevideo law . After successfully completing his studies, he got a job as a teacher in Montevideo. In 1920 he founded the literary magazine "Los Nuevos" with Federico Morador and this soon became the mouthpiece of young writers who, like Pereda Valdés, oriented themselves towards the literary life of France and Spain ( Modernismo ).

In all of his literary work, Pereda Valdés dealt with the cultural diversity of his country. In his poetry he repeatedly addressed the folklore of slaves and Indians, just as he dealt with it in his essays and non-fiction books. His work "El negro en el Uruguay" sparked controversial discussions when it was published.
