Wolf Blitzer (born March 22, 1948 in Augsburg , Germany ) is an American journalist and television presenter . Blitzer was best known for his work as the host of several programs on the US news channel CNN such as Wolf Blitzer Reports , Late Edition and The Situation Room, as well as moderating the joint presidential debates on CNN and the Internet platform YouTube .

Life

Blitzer grew up as the son of Jewish refugees from Poland who survived the German extermination and concentration camp Auschwitz, in the US state of New York , where he attended Kenmore West Senior High School and in 1970 the University of Buffalo with a BA in history left. After further studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies , he obtained a master's degree in international relations in 1972.

Blitzer began his career as a journalist in 1972 in the Tel Aviv office of the Reuters news agency , before moving to Washington in 1973 as a correspondent for the Israeli daily Jerusalem Post . Subsequently, he reported on political events in the United States and the Middle East as a journalist for the Jerusalem Post until 1990. In his seventeen years with the Post, Blitzer reported on, among other things, the Israeli-Egyptian peace accord of 1977, the 1983 Lebanon war and the Jonathan Pollard affair , about which he wrote a book ( Territory of Lies ) in 1989 that was published by the New York Times was voted into the list of “most readable books” of the year. In addition, Blitzer conducted interviews with all four US presidents and numerous American ministers during this time.

In 1990, Blitzer took over engagements for the news channel CNN. There he first reported as a foreign correspondent from Moscow and Iraq - during the 2nd Gulf War in 1991, before he took over the post of CNN correspondent in the White House in 1992, which he held until 1999. From 1998 onwards, Blitzer increasingly took up “studio jobs” as an interviewer and host or anchorman for political information and discussion programs: he presented the program Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer , which was broadcast in over 180 countries. Other programs he presented were The World Today (1999) and The Wolf Blitzer Reports (2000).

In 2004, Blitzer served as the main presenter of CNN's coverage of the US presidential election before hosting the 2005 news program " The Situation Room ".

For his work, Blitzer has received the Emmy Award (1996 for his reporting on the terrorist attacks in Oklahoma City ), the George Foster Peabody Award (for his reporting on the Hurricane Katrina disaster ) and the Journalist Pillar of Justice Award (2004 ) and the Daniel Pearl Award from the Chicago Press Veterans Association.

Blitzer has been married since 1973 and has one daughter.
