The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is a graduate school for international politics and economics from Johns Hopkins University . It is based on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, DC and has a second campus in Bologna and a branch in Nanjing , China.

The SAIS is an institution for study and research in the field of international relations. It is a graduate school that only offers a Master's and Ph.D. confers. It is a center of political discourse in the USA and is used to research and teach political scientists, economists and historians.

Most of the students at SAIS take the two-year Master of Arts in International Relations and International Economics. The students are trained in an interdisciplinary course in areas such as political science, economics, finance, history and international law, with SAIS placing an emphasis on economic education and each student setting individual priorities. Some of the students spend the first year of study at the SAIS Bologna Center in Bologna, Italy and move to Washington for the second year of study. Every year around 150 students begin their studies at SAIS, selected from more than 1800 applicants (2009).

history

The School of Advanced International Studies was founded in 1943 by Paul H. Nitze and Christian Herter in Washington, DC. 1950 SAIS was affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 1955, SAIS opened the Bologna Center in Bologna, Italy, creating the first American graduate institution in Europe. In 1963, the company moved to its current premises on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, DC. The school is therefore in the immediate vicinity of embassies, research institutions, international organizations and companies. In 1986 the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing was opened as the third SAIS location. Since 2019, the dean of the SAIS has been the influential political scientist Eliot A. Cohen , who succeeded Middle East expert Vali Nasr . Other predecessors in the role were Jessica Einhorn or the later World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz .

Course offer

The SAIS awards three different degrees:

  • The Master of Arts in International Relations and International Economics (MA) . This two-year program consists of two different areas of focus, one of which is compulsory International Economics. The second focus is chosen from regional and functional specializations in the field of international studies and politics. 80 percent of the SAIS students study in the MA program. There is also the option of specializing in the areas of quantitative methods and economic theory, international finance or development economics.
  • The one-year Master of International Public Policy (MIPP) . Employees with at least nine years of professional experience in the fields of international relations and economics are trained there.
  • The Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is a multi-year doctoral program that leads to the title Ph.D. is completed.

There are also double degree cooperations with other graduate schools within the USA, e.g. B. with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, with the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, with the Stanford University Law School or with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Since April 2011, there has also been a double degree program with the INSEAD Business School , under which students can acquire degrees from both institutions in a shorter time.

Academic rankings

The educational institution is considered one of the leading institutions of its kind in the United States. Foreign Policy magazine ranked it second in its 2015 global ranking of all Masters in International Relations, behind Georgetown University, but ahead of Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, Princeton University Woodrow Wilson School, Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Well-known graduates

Well-known graduates include Madeleine Albright , Niels Annen , Wolf Blitzer , Timothy Geithner , Josef Joffe , Geir Haarde , Andreas Nick , Jody Williams , Gerold von Braunmühl and Bandar ibn Sultan . By 2009, more than 130 graduates of the SAIS were appointed ambassadors, including the German ambassador to Saudi Arabia Boris Ruge , the German ambassador to Albania Hellmut Hoffmann , the German ambassador to Latvia Rolf Schütte and the German ambassador to Qatar (2012-2015) Angelika Renate Storz-Chakarji , the German ambassador to Algeria (2011–2012) Jutta Wolke and the German ambassador to Indonesia (2009–2012) Norbert Baas .
