Rolf Ernst Schütte (born June 9, 1953 in Goslar ) is a German diplomat . Most recently he was ambassador to Latvia from 2015 to 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1973, Schütte began studying German , Russian and political science at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , which he graduated in 1979. In the meantime, from 1975 to 1976, with the support of a Fulbright scholarship, he also studied abroad at Ohio University and between 1979 and 1980 postgraduate studies at the Bologna Center of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University . He then worked as a lecturer for the German language at the University of Bologna between 1980 and 1981 .

In 1981 Schütte began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after its graduation was second secretary of the economic department at the embassy in the Soviet Union between 1983 and 1986 and first secretary of the political department at the embassy in Israel from 1986 to 1989 . This was followed by assignments at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn between 1989 and 1991 , initially as a consultant in the United Nations department and then as a consultant in the Humanitarian Aid Task Force for the USSR.

Schütte then moved to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City in 1991 , where he was counselor and representative in the Third UN Committee until 1993 . After his return, he served as a lecturer in the Legation between 1993 and 1997 and deputy head of the Middle East Department in the Foreign Office and from 1997 to 2000 as first class counselor and head of the political department at the embassy in Italy , before becoming head of the department between 2000 and 2004 Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova in the Foreign Office in Berlin .

Schütte then completed a research year in the USA from 2004 to 2005, during which time he was a visiting scholar in the Russia / Eurasia Program of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC , at the American Jewish Committee (AJC) in New York City and most recently on Center for European and German Studies at the University of California, Berkeley . He was then Consul General in San Francisco between 2005 and 2009 and then Chief of Protocol for the State of Berlin from 2009 to 2012 and head of the Department for Foreign Affairs in the Berlin Senate Chancellery before he was Consul General in Boston between 2012 and 2015 .

In August 2015, Schütte succeeded Andrea Joana-Maria Wiktorin as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Latvia . He stayed there until June 2019.
