Glen Spey is a whiskey distillery near Rothes , Moray , Scotland , UK .
history
Glen Spey was founded in 1878 by James Stuart & Co. under the name Mill of Rothes . In 1886, Stuart bought the Macallan distillery . W. & A. Gilbey bought Glen Spey for £ 11,000 in 1887. This made you the first English company to own a Scottish malt distillery. In 1920 a great fire broke out in the distillery. In 1962 W. & A. Gilbey merged with United Wine Traders and IDV (International Distillers & Vitners) was created. In 1970 Glen Spey was renovated. The number of stills has been increased from two to four. In 1972 IDV was first taken over by Watney Mann and this in turn by Grand Metropolitan. 1997 saw the elephant wedding between Guinness and Grand Metropolitan, from which Diageo emerged .
production
The water from the Speyside distillery comes from Doonie's Spring. The malt comes from foreign malthouses on the Moray Firth. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (2.0 tons) of steel and eight fermenting tanks ( wash backs ) (per 25,000 l). Distillation takes place in two wash stills (each 12,000 l) and two spirit stills (each 7,500 l), which are heated by steam.
Bottlings
Glen Spey is available as an original bottling in the Flora and Fauna series as a 12-year-old single malt .
