Rothes ( Gaelic : Rathais) is a town in the Moray region of Scotland . It is located about 60 km east of Inverness and 70 km northwest of Aberdeen on the north bank of the River Spey . Rothes was founded in 1766 on the site of an older settlement. In 2011 Rothes had 1252 inhabitants. The ruins of Rothes Castle , which date back to the 13th century, are located in the center of the village above the Glen Spey distillery .
Rothes is located in the important Speyside whiskey region . The active whiskey distilleries Speyburn , Glen Grant , Glenrothes and Glen Spey and the Caperdonich distillery, which was demolished in 2010, are located in Rothes .
