Speyburn is a whiskey - distillery in Rothes , Moray , Scotland . It is located in the Speyside whiskey region . The distillery is owned by Inverhouse Distillers Ltd. Some of the distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish list of monuments.
General
As one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, the Speyburn Distillery is located on the outskirts of the village of Rothes, in a narrow valley in the middle of the forest, not far from the river Spey , whose name was not only the inspiration for the distillery, but also for the entire Speyside region, which currently has over 50 whiskey distilleries in production .
history
The Speyburn distillery was founded in 1897. The builder of Speyburn, John Hopkins, who was also the owner of Tobermory at the time , insisted that production should begin in 1897, the sixtieth anniversary of Queen Victoria's coronation , and that it succeeded. Shortly after Christmas, thickly hooded workers produced a barrel of malt whiskey in the still door and windowless distillery .
After short-term closings in the 1930s and 1940s, Speyburn first made a name for itself in the 1960s when the first Drummalting ( drum malting ) went into operation there. A time and space-saving variant of barley malting. At that time the Speyburn was one of the most modern stills in the world. Speyburn has been part of Inverhouse Distillers since 1991, which is something of a life insurance policy for this small distillery.
production
The "Speyburn 10 Years" has been produced as a standard bottling since 1992, other products are a 21-year-old malt and, since 2009, the Bradan Orach without any age information .
