The Ultima GTR is a British super sports car that was developed in 1999 as a kit car .

History of origin

The company Ultima Sports Ltd. based in Hinckley , England, was founded in the early 1990s as a branch of Noble Motorsports Ltd., which built the Ultima MK1 – MK3 racing cars until 1992. The newly created company wanted to further improve the Ultima Sports, which was very successful in motorsport, and redefine it as an affordable sports car. The actual development time was 14 months. The body of the sport was so mature through many years of development that there were hardly any changes to it. The tubular frame and the engine mounts, on the other hand, have been completely redesigned, on the one hand to be adapted to the newer generation Chevrolet V8 and on the other hand to pass the test procedure for the German market. In addition, for the first time it was possible to order the car with aluminum rims from our own company.

Technical specifications

Chassis and body

Space frame chassis with 1.4 mm aluminum plates as planking in the cockpit area suitable for the accommodation of engines up to 1000 HP, with a body made entirely of GRP with side windows made of Plexiglas, cast, one-piece curved front window and a two-stage carbon fiber rear spoiler (special equipment), optionally as a coupé or as Spyder (Ultima Can-Am). The Coupe is also equipped with gullwing doors that open 90 ° to the front, which makes it easier to get in thanks to the very wide side sills with storage compartments.

interior

Depending on your wishes, the entire interior can be designed individually. Instruments / displays analog or digital, various bucket seats can be installed, further equipment such as leather, Alcantara, carpet, rear-view camera, radio navigation, etc.

engine

Ultima GTR rear

The GTR is supplied as a kit car without an engine, but we recommend the Chevrolet V8 Small Block with 6.3 l displacement from Amerspeed with 399 kW (543 hp) and 716 Nm torque. This engine is specially built for the Ultima by the American company Amerspeed. In addition to the "standard variant" mentioned, there are over 30 other motorization options at Amerspeed. The smallest engine is a 350 cui (5.7 l) V8 with 210 kW (285 hp), the largest is a 7.0 liter LS7 engine from the Corvette with 529 kW (720 hp). In the USA there are some GTRs with V8 biturbo engines that produce more than 735 kW (1000 hp).

However, the Amerspeed Chevy engines do not comply with the current emissions regulations for Germany and are therefore only eligible for approval via a very complex process according to §21 StVZO. The German Lotus Seven supplier Carbuilt is therefore offering a revised version of the chassis with a mount for the 4.2-liter V8 engine from Audi to simplify the approval process. This variant appears to be the most attractive in connection with the 6-speed gearbox due to the approval situation for the German market.

UltimaCars Germany has been offering road-legal Ultima GTR and CanAm with LS3 / LS7 and C5-R engines with an output of up to 800 hp since 2002. The installation of engines other than Chevrolet Small Block is not recommended by UltimaCars Germany or the UltimaCars parent plant. Amerspeed is still one of the preferred engine suppliers due to its many years of experience. However, all engines can also be obtained in Germany from UltimaCars Germany.

transmission

Porsche -G50- transaxle gearbox adapted to the Chevrolet engine . There is a choice between shift linkage and cable pull. UltimaCars Germany recommends the now exclusively built-in gearbox of the 996 Turbo with cable, since the standard G50 limits the top speed to 275 km / h. Modified turbo transmissions allow (depending on the engine power) already with a standard LS 7 engine with 500 PS V-Max over 300 km / h. The gearboxes are mounted using an adapter plate milled from an aluminum block.

tires

FA 9,5 "x18" 245/35 / ZR18, RA 13 "x18" 335/30 / ZR18 3-piece alloy wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-Fiorano, or Kumho Semislicks

Records

The Ultima GTR needs 9.4 seconds to get 100 mph (160.93 km / h) from standstill and back to zero, setting a new record in 2006. During the record, the Ultima GTR sprinted to 60 mph (96.56 km / h) in 2.6 seconds and hit the 100 mph mark (160.93 km / h) in 5.3 seconds. The world record holder completed the braking process from this speed back to standstill in 3.6 seconds. During the world record drive, Ultima Managing Director Richard Marlow himself sat at the wheel of the Ultima GTR720, which is powered by a V8 engine from General Motors .

In the internationally known British show Top Gear , the GTR720 model took first place for street-legal vehicles on the show's test track in 2007, clearly ahead of Ferrari Enzo or Bugatti Veyron 16.4.

Prices

The amazing thing about the Ultima GTR is the price. As a kitcar without a motor, it costs 15,931 British pounds plus approx. However, this price does not include any “extras” such as gears, seats, lamps, etc. A normally equipped Ultima GTR without a motor (prices vary greatly) for around 60,000 euros. The Amerspeed motor costs between approx. 5,500 and approx. 17,800 US dollars, depending on the expansion stage. The Audi engine costs around 8,000 euros. The assembly of the vehicle is relatively easy thanks to the detailed instructions and can also be carried out by normally gifted people using commercially available tools.

In practice, this means that when you use new parts for your own construction, you hardly get under 80,000 euros until the vehicle is ready to drive. When using high-quality gearboxes and motors as well as other contemporary additional equipment, the price can quickly be well over 100,000 euros, even if you build your own. There are Ultima models that cost 200,000 euros due to their high-quality components (without assembly costs).

However, if you still don't like building it yourself, you can purchase the car as a so-called "rolling chassis" for around 89,000 US dollars. Then only the engine and the gearbox have to be added. The German importer also offers complete turnkey versions. However, prices for these are only available on request.
