Blair Athol is a whiskey distillery in Pitlochry , Perthshire , Scotland . The distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish monument lists. The building of the distillery manager is listed in category C.
history
The distillery was founded in 1798 by John Stewart and Robert Robertson under the name Aldour Distillery . The name came from the nearby Allt Dour river. In 1825 James Robertson expanded the distillery and then gave it the name Blair Athol. In 1882 Peter Mackanzie bought the distillery.
In 1932, Blair Athol was closed. In 1933 Arthur Bell & Sons Ltd. bought the distillery, but it wasn't until 1949 that it was renovated and reopened. In 1973 the number of stills was increased from two to four. In 1985 United Distillers bought Blair Athol and opened a visitor center in 1987.
production
The water of the distillery belonging to the Highlands / Eastern Highlands region comes from the Allt Dour Burn (in German: Otterbach). The malt used comes from the Glen Ord Maltings. The distillery has a mash tun (8.0 tons) made of stainless steel and eight fermentation vats (40,000 l each) - four of which were made of larch wood until 2013 . They were replaced by stainless steel specimens in 2013. Distillation takes place in two wash stills (13,000 l each) and two spirit stills (11,500 l each) which are heated by steam.
Although almost 90% of Blair Athol whiskey is sold to Bell's (in 2003 it was even 99%), for the production of a blend whiskey, and which makes up its heart note, the whiskey is also sold as a single malt.
Bottlings
In addition to a 12-year-old whiskey from the Flora and Fauna series, there has been a 27-year-old whiskey from the Rare Malts series from 1975 with 54.7% ABV since 2003.
Sightseeing
Blair Athol has had a visitor center since 1987 and can be visited.
