The Cerithioidea are a superfamily of predominantly marine snails from the order of the Sorbeoconcha . It also contains several groups of freshwater snails (e.g. Thiaridae ( crown snails )), some of which have colonized freshwater from the sea , some independently of one another . The fossil record for the Cerithioidea goes back to the Chalk .

features

More or less typical for representatives of this group of Caenogastropoda are an (at least originally) tower-shaped shell, the presence of an operculum and an at least partially open gonoduct. All species are sexually separated, and parthenogenetic species also occur occasionally . The majority of the cerithioidea are oviparous , some groups are ovoviviparous or viviparous .

Systematics

In the classical systematics, the Cerithioidea belong to the Mesogastropes (middle snails ), an order of the Prosobranchia (front gill snails). This classification is considered out of date, since the mesogastropods are not a monophyletic group. In the phylogenetic system presented here, the Cerithioidea are assigned to the order Sorbeoconcha , subclass Orthogastropoda .

According to the current classification , the superfamily includes the following families (in alphabetical order):
