Forres ( Scottish Gaelic Farrais ) is a Royal Burgh Town in Moray in Northern Scotland with about 9,951 inhabitants on the Findhorn River .
It is said that Forres was already known to the ancient geographer Ptolemy as the port of Varris . Since the 12th century it has been a fortified structure to protect trade. The city's famous son is Donald Smith , later known as Lord Strathcona, one of the pioneers of the Canadian Pacific Railway . On the outskirts of Forres are the whiskey distilleries Benromach and the now decommissioned Dallas Dhu, which has been converted into a museum .
The local football club Forres Mechanics has played in the Highland Football League since 1893 .
At a crossroads in the north-east of the city, the Sueno Stone has been standing - since the 1990s, in a bullet-proof glass case to protect against all types of vandalism and erosion . It is a 7 m high and approximately 1.35 m wide flat stone stele (cross stone) made of red sandstone and comes from the era of the Picts.
In Forres, Orbex develops and produces launch vehicles for the launch of small satellites .
