Norfolk Broads

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Norfolk Broads ( German  wetlands of Norfolk ) is a landscape of rivers, lakes, marshes , reeds and forests in the English county of Norfolk and part of the national park "The Broads". It has a size of about 160 square kilometers. This natural-looking landscape was actually created by human hands.

In the Middle Ages, peat was cut here , which was used as heating material. When the water level rose in the 13th century, the Norfolk Broads, around 40 large, shallow lakes, were formed. Together with five rivers, they form about 200 km of navigable waterways.

The Broads have also been a popular tourist area (boat tourism) since the 1920s. There is a rental of motor and sailing boats. There are currently around 2000 charter boats and around 11,000 private boats permitted on the Broads. Not least because of this, the Norfolk Broads suffered from major ecological problems for decades. Therefore, in 1988 the "Broads Act" was passed, a law by which the Norfolk Broads were legally equated with the national parks in the United Kingdom . The area has since been administered by the Broads Authority , an authority - as it is called in the legal text - with the purpose

  • to preserve the beauty of nature,
  • promote the public's enjoyment of the Broads
  • to protect the interests of shipping,
  • To take into account the interests of agriculture and forestry and
  • protect the social and economic rights of residents.
