Tarn (body of water)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tarn is the English word for Karsee . It is also part of the name of mountain lakes in the Lake District National Park in Northern England .

In the general parlance of the northern English region, tarn is also used for small lakes, regardless of the way they were formed or the location.

In the Scandinavian languages , tjern , tjärn , tärn or tjørn denotes a small natural lake, which is often located in a forest with vegetation extending to the shore or into the water.

The word Tarn is derived from the Old Norse tjörn , which means pond, and is found in many names for small lakes in Cumbria and the Pennines as a result of the naming by the Anglo-Saxons who settled there after the Roman occupation left .
