The River Rothay is a small river in the Lake District in Cumbria , England .
The Rothay rises at a height of 470 m ( OS Grid Reference NY306108) above Dunmail Raise . The Rothay catchment area is Grasmere Common and the Easedale Tarn , the south side of Fairfield and various mountains east of Dunmail Raise u. a. Great Rigg , Rydal Fell , Scandale Fell and Heron Pike .
The Easedale Beck flows into the Rothay north of Grasmere . The river then crosses the village of Grasmere and then flows through Grasmere Lake . The river leaves the lake at the southern end and after 800 m it merges into Rydal Water Lake at its western end. The Rothay leaves Rydal Water Lake in its south-east and flows in the direction of Ambleside . To the southwest of Ambleside, the Brathay flows into the Rothay before it merges into the Windermere Lake.
The Rothay is particularly popular with kayakers between Grasmere and Rydal with difficulties from II to III . Trout live in the Rothay.
