Grasmere is a village in the county of Cumbria in the northwest of England . The location in the center of the Lake District National Park attracts many tourists.
geography
Grasmere is located near the lake of the same name. Not far north of the village rises the 405 m high Helm Crag . He is also known under the name of the lion and the lamb (dt .: the lion and the lamb ), what is due to the shapes of some rocks on the top of the hill. The A591 heads north to Keswick and south to Ambleside .
administration
The original Civil Parish was now administered by an Urban District Council , which became the Lakes Urban District in 1934. Today Grasmere is part of Lakes Parish.
Since the 1960s, the population of the place has been declining.
Personalities
The poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850) lived from 1799 to 1808 in Dove Cottage , a small country house on the outskirts of Grasmere.
The clergyman and philosopher William Archibald Spooner (1844–1930) is buried here.
