South Lakeland is a district in Cumbria in England that encompasses much of the Lake District landscape . The administrative seat is the city of Kendal . Other significant locations are Grange-over-Sands , Ulverston and Windermere .

When the new county of Cumbria was founded on April 1, 1974, the district was made up of different parts of other counties. From Westmorland these were the Borough Kendal, the Urban District Windermere, most of the Lakes Urban District and the Rural District South Westmorland. The urban districts of Grange and Ulverston and the rural district of North Lonsdale were separated from Lancashire . In addition, the Rural District Sedbergh of the West Riding of Yorkshire belongs to South Lakeland since then .
