Windermere is a town in Cumbria ( England ) with 2295 inhabitants, about one kilometer from the lake of the same name . Although Windermere itself does not touch the lake, it has now grown together with the older town of Bowness-on-Windermere , which is located on the lake , although the two places have each retained their own town center. There are a few museums in Windermere, but the main attraction for visitors is the lake, which Bowness touches about a twenty minute walk from the top of Windermere village at the bottom of the hill.
Until the construction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway , Windermere was called Birthwaite ; the development of the village was encouraged by the railway. From Windermere Station, trains and buses are available to the area, Manchester , Manchester Airport and the West Coast Main Line .
The geological formations in the area are named after the town. The sedimentary rock is known as the Windermere Group.
Windermere has been twinned with Dießen am Ammersee (Upper Bavaria) since 1998 , where the "Freundeskreis Ammersee-Windermere eV" maintains the partnership.
English composer and music teacher Arthur Somervell was born in Windermere in 1863 .
