Borrowdale is a valley and civil parish in the Lake District in the English county of Cumbria . Located in the traditional County of Cumberland , it is sometimes called Cumberland Borrowdale to distinguish it from a valley of the same name in Westmorland .

The valley is roughly in the middle of the Lake District. It is considered to be extremely scenic, is surrounded on all sides by high mountains and is traversed by the Derwent River to the north, which forms Lake Derwent Water at the lower end of the valley . There are small waterfalls nearby and the valley is the starting point for climbing England's highest peaks, including Sca Fell . In the sparsely populated area there is also a sprawling civil parish called Borrowdale, which belongs to Borough Allerdale and only has 438 inhabitants according to the 2001 census.

The Stake Pass connects with Borrowdale Great Langdale in the south.

The Villa Barrow House now serves as a hotel.
