Stemmer's sign

deeply cutting transverse folds and "box toes" often associated with the Stemmer's sign

The Stemmersche character is a diagnostic agent for the detection of lymphedema . It is named after the person who first wrote it, Robert Stemmer .

If the fold of skin over the second and third toes or fingers is widened, thickened and difficult or impossible to lift off, then Stemmer's sign is positive.

Lymphedema is present if Stemmer's sign is positive. However, a negative Stemmer's sign does not rule out lymphedema; that is, it can be false negative .
