The Great Langdale Valley served as a route for smugglers to bring alcohol into the country from the tax-free Isle of Man in the 19th century . The Esk home also opens up a path to Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain .

In Great Langdale, material for making axes was mined in the Stone Age . This makes the valley one of the oldest inhabited places in the Lake District. The age of the rock art of the Langdale Boulders is estimated to be 2500-5000 years.
