The Dungeon Ghyll is a watercourse in the Lake District , Cumbria , England .

The Dungeon Ghyll rises southwest of the Thunacar Knott and flows in a southeast direction between the Harrison Stickle in the north and the Pike of Stickle in the south.

Before the Dungeon Ghyll reaches the plains of the Great Langdale Valley, it flows over the Dungeon Ghyll Force waterfall . ( 54 ° 26 ′ 59 ″  N , 3 ° 5 ′ 50 ″  W ) The waterfall, with a height of about 18 m, fell from the lake Poet William Wordsworth in the poem Dungeon-Ghyll Force , also known as The Idle Shepherd Boys , is described. The waterfall was a must-see when visiting the Lake District in Victorian times .

The Dungeon Ghyll flows into the Great Langdale Beck .

Small watercourses flowing over steep terrain are a unique feature of the Cumbrian mountains. The watercourses have a diverse vegetation. The Dungeon Ghyll offers a particularly large biodiversity and has been a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1986 .
