Orrest Head is a mountain ( Fell ) in the Northern English Lake District National Park near the village of Windermere .
In spite of its less outstanding features in terms of altitude or scenic features, it is a popular destination, as it is the first mountain that the author Alfred Wainwright climbed on his first trip to the Lake District.
Its summit is easily reached within an hour from Windermere Train Station and offers good views of the Old Man of Coniston , Scafell Pike , Great Gable , Fairfield and the Langdale Pikes , some of the highest mountains in the Lake District.
