Great Gable is one of the 214 Wainwright mountains ( Fell ) in the Lake District National Park in Northern England and is assigned to the Western Fells . It is one of the ten highest and most famous mountains in the Lake District.

The old Norse form mikill gafl for large gable is assumed to be the origin of the name , as the silhouette of the mountain is reminiscent of the gable of a house.

geography

Great Gable lies at the northern end of Wasdale and is separated from the lower "Bruderberg" Green Gable in the northeast by the pass called Windy Gap . The Beck Head Pass separates it to the west from Kirk Fell , another prominent mountain at the end of Wasdale.

Each of the Lake District's central valleys offers a way to get to the top of the Great Gable. The starting point for hikes is Wasdale in the south- west, Ennerdale in the north-west , Borrowdale in the north-east and Great Langdale in the east . The most popular routes meet at Sty Head Pass with Styhead Tarn and continue over the southeast shoulder to the highest point. All routes are relatively steep and covered with loose scree. Except for the slightly lower Green Gable, there are no high-altitude routes to other mountains in the Lake District, which underlines the Great Gable's independent location. The top is covered with numerous rocks. Because of its independent location with no connections to other mountains, the Great Gable has one of the best views in the Lake District. In the summit region there is a memorial plaque in honor of the soldiers from the area who died in the First World War. A memorial service is held there on Remembrance Sunday every year .

On the north side ( Gable Crag ) and the south side ( Westmorland Crag , The Napes and Kern Knotts ) there are some striking rocks that are suitable for rock climbing. The Napes in particular plays an important role in the history of English alpinism and rock climbing. The ascent of The Nape rock needle by Walter Parry Haskett Smith in June 1886 is generally regarded as the beginning of English rock climbing as a sport in its own right. The Napes is now rated at UK Difficulty D.

The River Liza arises north of the Gable Crag between the Great Gable and the Green Gable.

Others

In January 1945, an RAF plane crashed during a training flight when it hit the summit of the Great Gable. Parts of the wreck were found in the nearby lake Wast Water in 2013 .
