The 10th women's handball world championship was held from November 24th to December 4th, 1990 in South Korea . A total of 16 teams initially competed against each other in a preliminary round in four groups. This was followed by the main round with six teams in two groups as well as the placement round for the bottom of the group for places 13 to 16. Finally, the placement games for places 3 to 12 and the final were played. The Soviet Union became world champions for the third time in a row by beating Yugoslavia 24:22. Although the German reunification had already taken place, two German teams competed. On December 4th they met in the game for 3rd place.

Preliminary round

In a preliminary round, the participants competed in four groups with four teams each. The best three teams in each group qualified for the final round.
