The 15th women's handball world championship was held from December 4th to 16th, 2001 in Italy . A total of 24 teams initially competed against each other in four groups in a preliminary round. This was followed by elimination games with round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals as well as placement games for places 3 to 6. World champions 2001 Russia became after a 30:25 victory in the final against Norway.
