The first women's handball world championship was held in Yugoslavia from July 13th to 20th, 1957 . A total of nine teams initially competed in a preliminary round in three groups. This was followed by the semi-finals with six teams in two groups, the consolation round for the bottom of the group for places 7 to 9 and the placement games. In front of 8,000 spectators, Czechoslovakia won the title by beating Hungary 7-1 and became world champions for the first and only time.

In the final, the team from Czechoslovakia defeated the team from Hungary in front of 8,000 spectators 7-1 (3-1). The top scorer in the final was Czechoslovakian Pavla Bartáková with two goals.
