The 16th women's handball world championship was held from December 2nd to 14th, 2003 in Croatia . A total of 24 teams competed against each other in groups in the preliminary round and the main round. This was followed by the final round with a group phase, followed by the semi-finals and finals as well as the placement games for the remaining places.
The world championship was held in a total of six cities. While the preliminary round was held in Split , Poreč , Karlovac and Čakovec , the knockout games took place in Zagreb and Rijeka .
The French team became world champions with a 32:29 victory in the final against Hungary.
