The Women's Handball World Championship (officially IHF Women's World Championship ) is a handball tournament between national teams to determine the best female national handball team in the world. The organizer is the International Handball Federation (IHF).

The current handball world champion in the hall is the Netherlands . The team was able to successfully prevail in the final against Spain in Japan in 2019 and thus won their first world title. The next women's handball world championship will take place in Spain in 2021 .

story

In 1949 the women's field handball world championships were held for the first time , two further world championships in field handball followed in 1956 and 1960. In 1957 and 1961 world championships were held on the small field . The two small field tournaments are counted as the first indoor world championships today, as the rules of indoor handball were played on the small field. The women's world championship has been held in the hall since 1964. After the end of World War II , the two tournaments took place at irregular intervals, usually every three or four years. The tournament has been held every two years since 1993. The 1968 edition in the Soviet Union was canceled at short notice by the IHF. The last field handball world championship was held in 1960.

Field handball world championships

Indoor handball world championships

The first women's world championship was held in Yugoslavia on a small pitch in 1957, with the Czechoslovak Republic winning .

With four world championship titles, Russia leads the list of handball women. The teams from the Soviet Union , the GDR and Norway each won three titles. France won two titles . So far, only the teams from the GDR, the Soviet Union and Russia have managed to defend their title. The only title win by the German national team came at the 1993 World Cup .

The world championships took place predominantly in Europe ; it was played three times in Asia and once in South America .

At the world championships from 1975 to 1982, the title was not decided in a final game, but in a final group with six teams each. The curiosity arose that in all three cases the eventual world champion had not won against the eventual runner-up.

1 The tournaments in 1957 and 1962 were held according to indoor rules on the small field (outdoors).
2 In 1975 the GDR and the USSR parted ways at 10:10. The GDR became world champions with 9: 1 points, as the Soviet team had lost against third Hungary and thus only achieved 7: 3 points.
3 In 1978 the GDR was defeated by the USSR 12:14, which in turn lost to the ČSSR. Both teams got 8: 2 points, the GDR had the better goal difference (+27 compared to +23).
4th In 1982 the USSR became world champion although they were inferior to Hungary in a direct comparison with 13:15. Hungary lost a total of three points due to a defeat against Yugoslavia and a draw against the GDR and became vice world champion.
