history

Senegal first took part in the African Championship in 1974 and was runner-up straight away - with only four participating teams. Senegal occasionally took part in the following tournaments, but did not reach any top placements. In 2006 , the team did not appear at short notice after the group draw for the tournament had already been made. In the mid-2010s, the results improved; at the 2014 African Cup of Nations, they narrowly failed in the quarter-finals due to the eventual winners Tunisia .

At the African Cup of Nations 2016 , Senegal initially easily reached the semi-finals, which they won against Tunisia 26:20. However, Tunisia successfully protested against the rating of this game, as captain Doungou Camara had played for France in the 2014 U-20 World Handball Championship in 2014 and the three-year ban for national teams had not yet expired. As a result, both Camara and the Senegalese team were disqualified.

Senegal achieved their best ever result at the African Championships in December 2018 in Brazzaville , Congo , although captain Camara was absent due to an injury. After the sovereign group victory in the preliminary round and a clear 23:16 quarter-final victory against Guinea , Senegal met the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the semi-finals , which they defeated just 22:21. In the final, the Senegalese team was defeated, despite a strong start - 9-1 lead in the 17th minute - to the favorite Angola with 14:19 and became runner-up. With this placement, Senegal qualified for the first time for the World Cup, which was held in Japan in 2019 . Senegal finished 18th out of 24 teams.
