The Serbian-Montenegrin women's national handball team and the women's national handball team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia represented Serbia and Montenegro (2003–2006) and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1993–2003) in international women's handball competitions . The selection consisted of women handball players from the republics of Serbia and Montenegro , who in 1992, after the fall of the state of Yugoslavia , formed the " Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" and from 2003 the state union of Serbia and Montenegro . The team is seen by both the International and the European Handball Federation as the direct successor to the Yugoslav women's national handball team . After Montenegro left the state in 2006, the Serbian national women's handball team became the official successor to the Serbian-Montenegrin team.

Because of the extensive sanctions imposed by the international community due to the Balkan conflicts , the first qualification for a major tournament was not played until the European Championship in 1996. In the qualification for the European Championship 2006 the runner-up of the world champions Romania could be eliminated in the playoffs when the joint team played for the last time. However, because the handball association of Montenegro took its players out of the team for the European Championship, Serbia played the tournament under its own name. The greatest success of the Serbian-Montenegrin women's national handball team was third place at the 2001 World Cup .
