The British women's national handball team is the selection team of the British Handball Association (BHA) and represents the United Kingdom in international women's handball tournaments .

background

Handball is largely unknown in the motherland of football . When London won the 2012 Olympic Games on July 6, 2005 and Great Britain, as the host country, automatically qualified for participation in the tournament, intensive activities began to establish a British women's national handball team.

Building the national team

For the period from 2006 to 2009, the BHA was given a budget of 3 million pounds sterling , which corresponds to about 4.3 million euros, to build a national team. A three-stage plan was brought into being.

  1. The global search for handball players of British descent began immediately.
  2. Handball has been integrated into the curriculum in schools.
  3. The Danish Handball Federation (DHF) was involved in the development project.

In the first selection process in June 2007, a total of 4,800 Britons were in the "Sporting Giants" eliminations. The only criteria for participation were body size, which had to be at least 1.80 meters for women, interest in sport and the shared dream of the five rings.

A trial training session was held in Glasgow with 70 test candidates, some of whom were recruited from other non-Olympic sports such as rugby and netball . Further training camps followed and in the end there were 30 candidates, 15 women and 15 men each, some of whom are now being further promoted in Denmark. In spring 2011 it was finally decided that the team will take part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The head coach of the British women's handball team is the Dane Morten Arvidsson.

Remarks

In English, handball is usually understood to mean games such as Irish handball or American handball . However, these are setback games that are more similar to squash , but the ball is played against the walls with the hand , hence the name. That is why handball is called team handball or Olympic handball in Great Britain, similar to the USA .

General Manager of the British Handball Association has been Paul Goodwin since September 3, 2007. BHA chairman is Stevie Neilson.
