Gaelic handball

Gaelic handball ( English less often Irish handball , in Ireland often short handball , Irish liathróid láimhe , German "handball") belongs to the ball sports and especially to the return games .

It is a ball sport related to Basque pelota . The sport is maintained as a traditional Irish sport by the Gaelic Athletic Association and is also widespread in countries with Irish immigrant communities (such as USA , Australia ). It largely corresponds to American handball .

Playground is traditionally a court enclosed on at least three sides , also called an alley , with a 30-foot-long batting wall and 60-foot-long side walls.

The game is played according to different rules:

  • 40x20 : "International Rules", 40 × 20 foot field size with a blue rubber ball, gloves and eye protection are mandatory
  • 60x30 : 60 × 30 foot field size with a larger, red rubber ball, gloves and eye protection are not required
  • One Wall : Front wall with 20 × 16 feet and a playing field of 20 × 34 feet with a ball that is comparable to that of racquetball
  • Hardball : 60 × 30 foot field size with a ball made of cork and leather
