The Spanish women's handball national team represents Spain in international tournaments in women's handball .
The women's team has long been overshadowed by the much more successful men's national team . The Spaniards celebrated their first major success at the 2008 European Championship in Macedonia , where they surprisingly won the silver medal. At the 2009 World Cup , the team reached the semi-finals for the first time, but in the game for third place, the Iberians were defeated by Norway . The next big success followed at the 2011 World Cup in Brazil . This time the team won the bronze medal with a 24:18 in the game for third place against Denmark . The Iberians also won the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games after a 31:29 after extra time against South Korea. At the EM 2014 they moved into the final, which ended with a 3-goal defeat against Norway. This was followed by 4 weaker years, in which, with the exception of the 2016 Olympic Games, only double-digit placements were achieved. The return to the top of the world came at the 2019 World Cup in Japan, when the final was only lost in the last few seconds.
