The 3rd women's field handball world championship took place from June 12th to 19th, 1960 in the Netherlands . The host was the International Handball Federation (IHF). Romania became world champion.
It was the last time a women's world championship was held on the large field. In 1957 and 1962 world championships were held on the small field according to indoor handball rules, which the IHF officially counts as the first women's handball world championship today.
Six teams took part in the competition: Denmark, Germany (represented by a joint selection of the Federal Republic and the GDR), the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and Romania.
It was played in a preliminary round with two groups of three, then crossover semi-finals and placement games for places 1 to 6.
mode
The game was played in two groups of three "everyone against everyone". The first two of these groups played two crossover semifinals, the winners for places 1 and 2, the losers for 3 and 4. The third group played for places 5 and 6.
