6th Symphony (Prokofiev)
The . Symphony No. 6 in E flat minor , Opus 111 by Sergei Prokofiev (first performed in Leningrad on October 11, 1947 Conductor: Evgeny Mravinsky ) is the tragic counterpart to the Fifth Symphony and is this the same ratio as Shostakovich's Eighth to its Seventh .
The composer withdrew the generally affirmative, heroic-patriotic and musically accessible character of the previous work on the grounds that after enjoying the victory in the “ Great Patriotic War ” in this symphony, he also commemorated the terrible losses it had caused. In addition, the opus number 111 had an important personal meaning for the composer , who was also known as a pianist for a long time : He adored Ludwig van Beethoven's piano sonata No. 32 op. 111 that he had already adopted its structure in his Second Symphony . The 6th symphony consists of three movements and is reminiscent of Arthur Honegger's symphonies . The total duration is about 35 minutes.
- Allegro moderato , freely structured, lyrical-sad first movement, which is heading for a series of dissonant, martial climaxes
- Largo , tragic slow movement
- Vivace , joy-drunk frenzy leading to a breakdown.
