3rd Symphony (Prokofiev)

The . Symphony No. 3 in C minor , Opus 44 (composed in 1928, premiered in Paris on May 17, 1929 Conductor: Pierre Monteux ) is despite initial success, listed the least likely of the seven symphonies by Sergei Prokofiev . The complex, harshly orchestrated work draws the majority of its themes and motifs from the only posthumous (1954) and also rarely performed opera Der fierige Engel (based on the novel The fiery angel by Valeri Brjussow ). Similar to Paul Hindemith's symphony for the opera Die Harmonie der Weltthe symphony was preceded by an operatic work, for which Prokofiev, however, found no theater. Despite the four movements, the Third Symphony does not have the proportions of the classical symphony: The length of the final movement is barely half that of the first movement. In Prokofiev's Third has a resemblance to the Third Symphony of Anton Bruckner on. Prokofiev himself was satisfied with his new work and noted in 1928: "It seems to me that I have succeeded in deepening my musical language in this symphony."

The work consists of four movements and takes about 35 minutes.

  1. Moderato
  2. Andante
  3. Allegro agitato
  4. Andante mosso - Allegro agitato

The opening theme of the first movement corresponds to the main theme of the last scene of the opera, the obsession scene in the monastery. The turbulent and characterized by dissonant harmonic third set also includes references to the second Klaviersonate of Frédéric Chopin on.
