1956 World Women's Field Handball Championship

The 2nd women's field handball world championship took place from July 1st to 8th, 1956 in the Federal Republic of Germany . The host was the International Handball Federation (IHF). Romania became world champion.

Eight teams took part: Germany (represented by the Federal Republic), France, Yugoslavia, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania and Hungary.

After a qualifying round with two elimination games, the main round took place in two groups of three, and finally three placement games for places 1 to 6.

Qualifying round

The losers were eliminated immediately, the winners (Yugoslavia and Romania) moved into the main round.

Main round

The winners of the qualifying round met four seeded teams and played with them in two groups of three "everyone against everyone". The first of these groups fought for places 1 and 2 in the final, the second for 3 and 4, the third for 5 and 6:
