The first women's field handball world championship took place in Hungary from September 25 to 27, 1949 . The host was the International Handball Federation (IHF). Host Hungary became world champion.
Four teams took part: France, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Hungary.
prehistory
The IHF commissioned the Hungarian Handball Federation during the IHF Congress in June 1948 with a world championship.
The following teams were registered: France , the Netherlands , Austria , Poland , Romania , Czechoslovakia and Hungary
The teams from the Netherlands, Poland and Romania did not participate for unknown reasons.
The French delegation had problems getting the visa. On September 20th, the day of departure, they still did not have a visa. The departure was delayed by 24 hours. The team traveled to Hungary by train and met the Austrian women and men team on the train from Austria.
The Austrian team called itself the defending champion because they saw participation in the 3rd Women's World Games in 1930 as a world championship, but the IHF did not recognize this title.
Placement round
The game was played in a “everyone against everyone” group.
