The 4th women's handball world championship was held from December 11th to 19th, 1971 in the Netherlands . A total of nine teams initially competed against each other in a preliminary round in three groups. This was followed by the semi-finals with six teams in two groups, the consolation round for the bottom of the group for places 7 to 9 and the placement games. In front of 3500 spectators, the GDR won the title with an 11: 8 final victory over Yugoslavia and became world champions for the first time.
