The 7th handball world championship for women was held from November 30th to December 10th 1978 in Czechoslovakia . A total of twelve teams competed in the preliminary round in three groups. This was followed by the final round, in which places 1–6 were played in a group, as well as placement games in a group for places 7–9. The GDR was able to successfully defend its title from 1975 and again relegated the Soviet Union and Hungary to their places.
