Handball Oceania Championship
The Oceania Handball Nations Cup (officially: Oceania Handball Nations Cup ) is a competition in handball , which the oceanic Handball Federation is (OCHF) for men since 1994 in straight, fought for women since 1997 in odd years.
In 1991 the Australian men's national handball team took part in the Asian handball championships . However, no qualifying place for the 1992 Summer Olympics was made available to the team by the Asian Handball Federation , although they were placed second in their group. The winner of the first Oceania Championship in 1994 was also not offered a qualification place for the 1995 men's handball world championship by the world association IHF , but the winner had to play a qualifying game against the worst-placed European team.
The tournament was held by the now dissolved association, the Oceania Handball Federation, until 2010 and served as a qualification tournament for the five full members of the IHF for the handball world championship . At the same time, a continental championship (officially: Oceania Handball Champions Cup ) was held until 2010 , in which teams also took part that were only associated members of the OHF, but not members of the world association IHF , and thus could not qualify for the World Cup. Since the new association OCHF took over the organization, the tournament is again identical to the continental championship.
The first two men's continental championships were held in Sydney in 2004 and 2006 . The hosts won the tournament both times. The first women's championship was held in Auckland in May 2007 and was won by New Caledonia .
In 2014, Australia, the winner of the 2014 Oceania Championship, was refused a qualifying place for the 2015 Men's Handball World Championship by the IHF because it did not recognize the OCHF due to the fact that there were too few member associations. The qualification place was awarded to the German men's national handball team , the best non-qualified team at the 2013 men's handball world championship .
