The tournament was played annually - except in 2017 - from 2015 to 2019. Although it has been organized by the European Handball Federation (EHF) since the beginning , there will only be an official European championship under the name European Wheelchair Handball Championships from 2020 .
The record titleholders are the Netherlands with two wins in the first two events in 2015 and 2016. Portugal made it to the final every time, but could only win the tournament in 2018.
