Butzke-Werke AG share of more than DM 50 from August 1974

The Butzke-Werke are a listed building at Ritterstraße  26 in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg and one of the last remaining commercial yards in the former "Rollkutscherviertel" or "Exportviertel".

History and function of the building

The building was erected in two phases from 1893 to 1894 and from 1897 to 1898 according to plans by Georg Lewy . The builder was the fittings factory Bernhard Joseph AG , which in 1926 started with the metal goods and lamp factory F. Butzke u. Co. merged and moved into the multi-colored brick building. In the same year Wolf Netter & Jacobi acquired the majority of the shares; after its " Aryanization " in 1937, the Berliner Handels-Gesellschaft and Deutsche Bank took over the majority of shares in the company and renamed it "Butzke-Werke AG". The front building was destroyed in the Second World War , only the rear transom remained. In 1977 the “AQUA” trademark was added to the company name, which is why the building is sometimes also referred to as the AQUA-Butzke-Werke . After the company moved to Ludwigsfelde in 1997 , the building was initially empty. From 2006 to 2010, under the leadership of the architect Amir Abadi (Neoplan AO), it was converted into a 12,000 m² creative center. This gave up the original idea of setting up loft apartments in the factory rooms . The client was Norddeutsche Grundbesitz, based in Hamburg .

Since 2007, the techno and live music club Ritter Butzke has been located in two factory halls .

The Gewerbesiedlungs-Gesellschaft bought the building in 2014 and has been operating it as an industrial estate under the name AQUA Carré Berlin ever since .
